This cathedral dates mostly from the 15th century, it was the former parish church of St.Peter and St.Paul, its tower and crocketed spire are a landmark from all around the town.
The church has registers dating to 1560, from this period there are also splendid 16th century monuments. Interestingly, during the 16th to the 18th century the church became known as Trinity Church, but reverted to its original dedication at the beginning of the 19th century when it underwent extensive renovation.
The interior is quite spectacular, it has a nave, aisles and chancel. There are impressive columns and dramatic stained glass floods the cathedral with light heightening its magnificent floor and showing to best advantage historic treasures of centuries which include the tombs of three Earls of Shrewsbury.
During the last century the nave was extended and the cathedral was rehallowed in 1966. It has a notable choir and is proud of its choral heritage. It part-takes of services for all denominations including weekly meditations sessions offered jointly by the cathedral and a local Buddhist group.
Sheffield cathedral has an ancient past of which it is justifiably proud, but its forward thinking and willingness to embrace people of all faiths ensures its place at the heart of the great Sheffield community.
